Tsunami Relief Fundraising
Event:
A fusion of South Asian &
local culture & entertainment
On December 26th an earthquake
in the Indian Ocean resulted in Tsunami waves that hit the
coastlines of countries in South Asia and left a wake of
devastation. Over 300,000 people lost their lives and to
those living - loved ones, homes, water and food sources and
supplies were lost.

In an unprecedented response,
people from all over the world opened their hearts to
those in need. And Don Heights Unitarian Congregation
nourished an idea that came to flower as its Tsunami
Relief Fundraising Event.
The concept was a little like a
telethon without the telephones. There was
entertainment, speakers, auctions and a big thermometer
to keep track of how much money had been raised
throughout the day. There was also food, baking,
crafts, etc. that could be purchased at the tables at
the back. Throughout the day, people would come and
go. We set our sights at raising $5000.
By the end of the day, we had raised in excess of
$6800, far exceeding our goal. Sales of remaining items
that have followed have pushed it over $7000 and there
is still more to coming in. |

Just as important, Don Heights really came together as a
community and reached out its arms to the greater community
in a great act of caring and welcoming.
